An ode to the poplar tree

The artwork “Green Gold” on the Stationsplein in Best is an ode to the poplar tree and what this tree means to this environment. You can walk through the artwork or stay on one of the poplar benches. Notice the moment that makes a leap in your heart as the station square passes and can look straight through the corridor that forms the artwork.

The wooden shoe is used in the artwork as a recognizable “golden” symbol that stands for all products that can be made from poplar wood.

Read about it in the Eindhovens Dagblad.

Green Gold is part of Best Township’s Productive Nature Project. The goal is to create multiple art pieces within the theme of Productive Nature, at various locations in the municipality of Best. Art expressions must be structural in nature. Residents and visitors should be inspired by the art displays. In addition, the realization of the artworks should create a connection between the Productive Nature in the Nature Gate De Vleut in connection with the center and the station area of Best.

Thanks to Best Municipality, Metaalplan, Van Helvoirt Groenprojecten and Roel Muurlink.

The Best area has historically had a coulisse landscape with poplar trees. A coulisse landscape is a semi-open landscape characterized by a patchwork quilt of small irregular plots screened by, in this case, poplars. As you move through a coulisse landscape, you see landscape elements disappear in front of and behind the rows of trees and reappear moments later. This patchwork was created by the forepaw law in effect in the Best area.

The front property right means that landowners have the right to plant and grub trees on a piece of land in front of their own property. The proceeds are for the landowners. Usually, this refers to the shoulder of a road that runs alongside the plot. Thus, the various rows of poplars have various owners. The result is different planting years and felling or grubbing routines. You can see in the landscape the various growth stages of the trees, some larger and thicker and older than others. For landowners in the area, these poplars were used as investments and piggy banks. The wood produced by the poplar was sold. This created a vibrant lumber industry in the Best area. Poplar wood was used to produce clogs and matches, among other things. Today, poplar wood is increasingly used as a building material.
